Why it matters for listed companies
The rebound was narrow: FMCG, consumer durables and PSU banks carried it, while small caps, hospitals and part of IT closed lower. ITC's move followed analyst comments that its response to the cigarette tax increase is going better than first thought and that profitability appears to be bottoming out, which matters for the whole tobacco and FMCG pack that was marked down after the tax change. The day's support came from softer crude and firmer Asian markets; nothing in the session changed the pressures of the past weeks, and the RBI's rate decision is due on October 7.
