The Reserve Bank of India's six-member rate panel voted unanimously on October 7 to lift the repo rate from 5.25% to 5.50% and changed its stance from neutral to 'calibrated tightening'. Governor Sanjay Malhotra said the inflation outlook was no longer benign and that the next move can only be an increase or a pause. The bank raised its FY27 inflation projection to 5.2% from 5.0% and its growth projection to 7.1%; August consumer inflation was 4.82%.
Why it matters for listed companies
The repo rate sets the price of floating-rate home, vehicle and business loans, so the change reaches banks and non-bank lenders through loan pricing and funding costs, and housing developers and vehicle makers through the monthly instalments their customers pay. The stance change matters as much as the 25 bp: the governor ruled out cuts for now, which shapes bond yields and lenders' deposit rates. One quarter-point step is small for any single borrower; the cited drivers are crude oil, a weak monsoon and a softer rupee.
