FADA: September vehicle retail sales up 32% to 25.37 lakh units, the highest for any September

IN Automobile and Auto Components Financial Services

What happened

The dealers' federation FADA reported 25,36,920 vehicles registered in September 2026, 31.82% more than a year earlier. Passenger vehicles reached 4,27,213 units (+32.1%), two-wheelers 17,90,188 (+33.08%), three-wheelers 1,32,570 (+22.25%) and commercial vehicles 1,03,557 (+37.62%). Urban and rural sales grew at almost the same pace. FADA's president called it the most base-distorted month of the year, because buyers held back in September 2025 ahead of the GST cut.

Why it matters for listed companies

Retail registrations show what actually left showrooms, as against the factory despatches the carmakers reported on October 1, so they bear on dealer stock at passenger-vehicle, two-wheeler and truck makers and on disbursals at vehicle financiers. The headline rate flatters: FADA puts first-half growth at 20.77%, or about 17% once September's low base is set aside. In the fuel mix, CNG was 23.11%, hybrids 9.44% and electric 8.45% of passenger-vehicle sales. Dealers named price increases as the main risk to demand.
