The US Federal Reserve raised its policy rate by 25 basis points to a 3.75-4% range, a change in direction back toward tightening. In India, retail inflation rose to 4.82% in August and wholesale inflation to 9.92%, and the 10-year government bond yield was trading near 7.05%, close to a four-month high. Experts quoted in the report see room for up to 50 bp of RBI tightening in 2026, which would take the repo rate to 5.75% from 5.25%.
Why it matters for listed companies
A narrower gap between US and Indian interest rates reduces the appeal of Indian bonds and equities for foreign investors and adds pressure on the rupee, raising imported inflation. With retail inflation above the RBI's 4% target, the Fed's move strengthens the case for tighter domestic policy, which matters for banks' bond portfolios, funding costs at NBFCs and housing financiers, and rate-sensitive realty and auto demand. IT exporters get a rupee cushion but face softer US client spending when US borrowing costs climb.
