A Reuters report, cited by Business Today, says SEBI plans to stop using the closing auction session (CAS), introduced on August 3 for stocks with futures and options, to set derivatives settlement prices for at least a year. Settlement would go back to the volume-weighted average price of the last 30 minutes of trading, while the cash market keeps the auction; the change may come this month. SEBI had received about 20,000 comments on its September 12 consultation paper. In early trade BSE rose 3.55%, Angel One 3.5%, Motilal Oswal 3.1%, Groww 2.25% and Nuvama 1.85%.
Why it matters for listed companies
Exchanges and brokers earn most of their transaction income from derivatives, so the method that fixes the expiry-day settlement price feeds straight into volumes. Under CAS, trading bunched into the final minutes: average traded value per minute on NSE between 3:20 and 3:30 pm rose to Rs 189.82 crore from Rs 126.31 crore before it, and expiry-day swings drew complaints. A return to the 30-minute average removes that concentration for BSE, unlisted NSE and discount brokers such as Angel One and Groww. The report is unconfirmed by SEBI, and nothing changes for cash-market closing prices.
