The Odisha High Court dismissed Vedanta Aluminium's petition seeking bauxite from state-owned Odisha Mining Corporation at the old contract rate of Rs 1,000 a tonne. Brokerage CLSA puts the liability for past supplies at about Rs 2,500 crore before tax and interest, and up to $290 million with interest. The company has been booking OMC bauxite at Rs 3,000 a tonne since April 2026; the market price is around Rs 3,800.
Why it matters for listed companies
Bauxite is the starting raw material for alumina and aluminium, so the ruling settles a cost dispute rather than changing output. CLSA estimates a near-term rise in production cost of roughly $10 a tonne and a one-time hit of about 2.8% of market value including interest, which it calls limited over the medium term. The offset it names is more sourcing from OMC and the start of Vedanta's own Sijimali mine. The order also signals that state miners in Odisha can price ore closer to market, which matters to other aluminium producers buying from them.
