HDFC Bank's business update for the July-September quarter shows gross advances up 16.8% from a year earlier and up 5.2% from the June quarter, with deposits up 18.8% from a year earlier. Separately, the RBI cleared Anup Bagchi as managing director and chief executive on September 30 for a three-year term. He joined the board as an additional director on October 2 and takes charge when Sashidhar Jagdishan's term ends on October 26. Bagchi was most recently head of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance.
Why it matters for listed companies
HDFC Bank is the largest weight in the Nifty 50 and Nifty Bank, so its numbers set the tone for the banking earnings season. Deposits growing faster than loans matters for a lender that has spent the period since its merger with HDFC Ltd bringing down a high loan-to-deposit ratio; it eases pressure on funding costs just as the RBI's rate panel meets on October 5-7 with economists pencilling in a hike. The update gives no margin or asset-quality figures - those come with the full results - so it says little yet about profit.
These figures are measured, not attributed. Prices and rates move for many reasons at once; they show
