Government clears about Rs 1.1 trillion of military purchases, 98% from Indian companies; defence stocks rise

IN Capital Goods

What happened

The government approved proposals to buy about Rs 1.1 trillion of military equipment, with 98% to be sourced from Indian companies. Items include Advanced Light Helicopters for the Army, Su-30MKI overhauls, ground-based multi-purpose jammers and Arudhra radars. The Nifty India Defence index rose 1.35% while the Nifty 50 fell 0.41%: BEML gained 4.08%, HAL rose over 3% to Rs 5,009, Paras Defence and Apollo Micro Systems rose over 3%, and BEL gained 1.6% to Rs 411. Analysts named HAL and BEL as the main beneficiaries.

Why it matters for listed companies

Such approvals are the first stage of procurement, so contracts and revenue follow over several years rather than immediately, but a 98% domestic share channels most of the value to Indian suppliers. HAL builds the ALH and services the Su-30MKI fleet, and BEL is a major supplier of radars and electronic-warfare systems, so their order pipelines gain visibility; smaller electronics and component makers take part through subcontracts.

Reported by Business Standard — “Analysts see HAL, BEL as top beneficiaries of ₹1.1 trn defence buys” ↗ on 08 Sept 2026.
