The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit estimates that record summer heat and drought cost Europe 16.7 million tonnes of grain worth €3.2 billion, up from a €1.8 billion estimate in July. France lost 5.8 million tonnes (€1.47 billion), Hungary 3.1 million, the UK 3 million, Germany 2.5 million and Spain 1.2 million. Soybean yields are down 15%, sugar beet 11% and potatoes 7%.
Why it matters for listed companies
For India the link is indirect: a smaller European harvest tightens world cereal and sugar supply at a time when the FAO food index is already at its highest since 2022 and India's own monsoon ended about 13% below normal. Packaged-food makers buy wheat, sugar and edible oil as raw materials, so firmer world prices reach them through input costs. In Europe the loss falls first on farm incomes and on food processors' grain and beet costs; fertiliser in Great Britain rose 30-40% and remains about 20% above pre-conflict levels.
