State-owned banks published provisional September-quarter numbers. Bank of Baroda's global advances rose 18.27% from a year earlier to Rs 15.12 lakh crore and deposits 17% to Rs 17.51 lakh crore. Canara Bank's global loan book grew 19.35% to Rs 13.73 lakh crore. Bank of India's domestic loans rose 17.7% to Rs 7.03 lakh crore while domestic deposits climbed 23.3% to Rs 9 lakh crore. Bandhan Bank's loans grew 13.1% to Rs 1.58 lakh crore, with deposits up 9.2% and CASA deposits up only 4.3%.
Why it matters for listed companies
These are the first hard numbers for the quarter from public-sector lenders and they match the acceleration private banks reported a day earlier. For bank earnings the open question is margins: loan growth of 17-19% has to be funded, and Bandhan's 4.3% CASA growth shows cheap deposits are harder to gather. Retail, farm and MSME books are growing fastest (Canara's rose 21%, Bank of Baroda's retail 19%), the segments most directly repriced by today's RBI decision. Full results with profit and asset quality come later in October.
