Ahead of Tuesday's US open, Reuters reported S&P 500 futures at levels above the index's record and the Nasdaq in line for a third all-time high in a row. Brent crude fell 2% to $97.96 a barrel. The 10-year Treasury yield slipped 3 basis points to 5.2815% and the 30-year to 5.6356%. The dollar index lost 0.35% to 101.80, and gold rose 0.8% to $4,172.97 an ounce. MSCI's global share index was up 0.2%.
Why it matters for listed companies
Lower oil and lower yields work on different parts of the market: cheaper crude trims revenue for oil producers while easing fuel costs for airlines and freight, and a lower 10-year yield reduces the discount applied to long-dated technology earnings and the funding cost of leveraged borrowers. The report cites a Goldman Sachs estimate of 27% third-quarter earnings growth for the S&P 500, more than half of it from companies supplying AI infrastructure, which shows how concentrated the profit base behind the record is. These were pre-market levels, not closing prices.
