What happened

Consumer prices rose 0.5% in May and 4.2% from a year earlier, the fastest annual pace since April 2023. Energy prices rose 3.9% on the month and 23.5% on the year, with gasoline up 40.5% annually, and energy accounted for more than 60% of the overall increase. Core CPI, excluding food and energy, rose 0.2% on the month and 2.9% on the year. S&P 500 futures slipped about 0.5% after the release.

Why it matters for listed companies

With headline inflation at 4.2% but core still below 3%, the shock was concentrated in fuel, which raises costs for airlines, truckers and delivery companies and eats into lower-income households' discretionary spending. Persistently high headline readings raise the odds of tighter Fed policy and higher yields, a headwind for rate-sensitive sectors such as housing and utilities and a source of higher deposit costs for banks.
