US consumer prices rise 3.7% in September, above August's 3.4%

US Financials Real Estate Consumer Discretionary

What happened

The US consumer price index rose 3.7% in the year to September 2026, against 3.6% forecast and 3.4% in August. Prices rose 0.6% in the month. Core CPI, excluding food and energy, was up 2.6% from a year earlier and 0.33% on the month. The Federal Reserve's next rate decision is on 28 October.

Why it matters for listed companies

Faster inflation keeps the Fed's next move in focus, which feeds into mortgage rates for homebuilders and real-estate trusts, borrowing costs for leveraged companies and the cost of consumer credit. Banks earn more on floating-rate loans when rates stay high, while retailers face a squeeze on discretionary spending.
