Why it matters for listed companies
Home resales drive commission income for listed brokerages and portal operators, loan volume for mortgage lenders and title insurers, and follow-on spending at home-improvement, furniture and appliance retailers. Fewer sales with more homes on the market also means more competition for homebuilders, who sell against the resale stock. The link to the rest of the period's news is the mortgage rate: at 6.67% it tracks longer-term Treasury yields, which rose with inflation and rate expectations.
