US consumer prices jump 0.9% in March as the Iran war lifts energy costs; annual inflation reaches 3.3%

What happened

The Bureau of Labor Statistics said the consumer price index rose 0.9% in March and 3.3% from a year earlier, up from 2.4% in February; both readings matched economists' forecasts. Core CPI, which strips out food and energy, rose 0.2% on the month and 2.6% on the year, slightly cooler than expected. Rising energy prices drove much of the increase, while food prices were flat on the month and up 2.7% from a year ago.

Why it matters for listed companies

A fuel-driven jump in headline inflation squeezes household budgets, which matters most for retailers, restaurants and travel companies whose customers are paying more at the pump. Because core inflation stayed contained, the print mainly raised the risk that energy costs spread into other prices. That shaped expectations for Fed policy and Treasury yields, which feed into the valuations of banks, homebuilders and long-duration growth stocks.
