US consumer prices fall 0.4% in June, the biggest monthly drop since April 2020, as gasoline sinks 9.7%

What happened

The consumer price index fell 0.4% in June from May, the largest one-month decline since April 2020. Gasoline dropped 9.7% in the month and the energy index fell 5.7%. The annual inflation rate slowed to 3.5% from 4.2% in May. Core prices, which leave out food and energy, were flat in the month and up 2.6% over the year. Food prices rose 0.2%.

Why it matters for listed companies

Cheaper fuel puts money back in household budgets, which supports spending at retailers, restaurants and travel companies, while it lowers the selling price for refiners and fuel retailers. For banks, insurers and property companies the link runs through interest rates: the inflation rate feeds the Federal Reserve's rate decisions, which set funding costs and mortgage pricing. The annual rate of 3.5% was still well above the Fed's 2% goal, so one month of falling prices did not settle the rate question.
