Uber said on October 6 that it is acquiring ezCater, a Boston-based marketplace through which companies order catering and workplace meals, in an all-cash deal valued at $2.3 billion. ezCater handled more than $2.5 billion of gross bookings in the past 12 months, with an average order above $400, and works with over 140,000 restaurants across the United States. Uber plans to combine it with Uber Eats and its Uber for Business corporate accounts.
Why it matters for listed companies
The deal moves Uber Eats from single consumer orders into group and corporate orders, where the ticket is many times larger. Restaurant chains that sell catering gain a bigger ordering channel but also deal with one more large intermediary taking a commission. For rival delivery platforms, corporate catering becomes a contested line. The price is small against Uber's size, so the direct effect on its accounts is limited; the report gives no closing date.
