French AI developer Mistral AI raised €3 billion in a Series D round at a post-money valuation of €21 billion, according to the law firm that advised it. Samsung Electronics led the round, with the Scaleup Europe Fund managed by EQT and existing investor PSG Equity as co-leads. The firm described it as the largest equity round completed by a European technology company. The money is to fund frontier research, more computing capacity for training models, infrastructure and international expansion.
Why it matters for listed companies
The €3 billion round values Europe's best-funded AI model developer at €21 billion and brings in Samsung Electronics, a memory-chip maker, as lead investor. Much of the cash is earmarked for compute, which means spending on AI chips and data-centre capacity. For European customers and governments seeking a non-US supplier, Mistral is the main regional option; its valuation remains a small fraction of those reported for US rivals OpenAI and Anthropic.
