Lufthansa reported record 2025 revenue of €39.6 billion and an 8% rise in first-quarter 2026 revenue, but said the surge in jet fuel prices linked to the Iran war adds roughly €1.7 billion to its costs this year. Chief financial officer Till Streichert said annual profit would likely be lower than originally anticipated. The group has cancelled 20,000 short-haul flights through October and suspended dozens of routes; chief executive Carsten Spohr pointed to above-average fuel hedging and the group's multi-hub model.
Why it matters for listed companies
Fuel is one of an airline's largest costs, so the oil shock squeezes margins across European carriers including Air France-KLM, IAG, easyJet, Ryanair and Wizz Air, with the size of the hit depending on each airline's hedging and its ability to raise fares. Capacity cuts such as Lufthansa's reduce seat supply, which supports fares, but weaker consumer spending from the energy shock weighs on demand. Airports and aircraft lessors are exposed through lower flight volumes.
