The government raised the special additional excise duty on fuel exports with effect from August, according to a gazette notification: diesel to Rs 25.5 a litre from Rs 15.5, aviation turbine fuel to Rs 22 from Rs 14.5 and petrol to Rs 3.5 from Rs 2.5. Domestic excise duty on petrol and diesel was left unchanged. The levy was introduced from March 27 to keep fuel available at home by discouraging exports during the West Asia conflict, and the rates are revised every fortnight.
Why it matters for listed companies
The levy takes a larger cut of what refiners earn on diesel and jet-fuel exports, nudging more product into the domestic market where pump prices are controlled. Refiners that ship a large share of output abroad take the direct hit to realisations, while domestic fuel retailers and consumers gain supply security. Because the rates are set on average international prices of crude oil and fuels since the previous fortnightly review, the Rs 10-a-litre jump in the diesel levy points to higher global diesel prices over the latest review period.
