Five largest US banks all beat second-quarter forecasts; Goldman earns $20.98 a share on $20.34 billion revenue

US Financials

What happened

JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Citigroup reported second-quarter results on the same morning and each came in above analyst estimates. JPMorgan's revenue was $58.02 billion against $50.19 billion forecast. Goldman earned $20.98 a share against a $14.48 consensus on revenue of $20.34 billion. Bank of America reported revenue of $31.7 billion, Wells Fargo $22.62 billion and Citigroup $24.77 billion. The report credits equities trading and steady consumer credit quality.

Why it matters for listed companies

The five banks set the tone for the Financials sector: their trading and deal-fee lines are shared with other brokers and investment banks, and their credit-quality readings are the first look at how card and loan books are holding up for regional lenders and card issuers. The same report notes that 30-year mortgage rates near 6.5% are holding back purchase and refinance demand, so mortgage origination revenue is the weak line inside otherwise strong results.
