Fed raises its benchmark rate a quarter point to 3.75%-4.00% in a unanimous vote

US Financials Real Estate Utilities

What happened

The FOMC voted 12-0 to lift the federal funds target range by 25 basis points to 3.75%-4.00%, its first rate change under Chair Kevin Warsh after holds in June and July. The statement said inflation remains elevated and that the increase would support a timelier return to the 2% goal, while describing economic activity as solid, domestic spending as resilient and capital investment as robust.

Why it matters for listed companies

Higher policy rates raise borrowing costs for households and companies, lift banks' deposit costs while repricing floating-rate loans, and pressure valuations of rate-sensitive groups such as homebuilders, REITs and utilities. The unanimous vote showed broad support for tightening, which matters for Treasury yields, the dollar and companies that depend on refinancing.
