What happened

The European Commission said its AI Office, together with national authorities, began enforcing the Artificial Intelligence Act on 2 August 2026. New transparency rules started to apply on the same date: chatbots and other interactive AI systems must tell users they are dealing with AI, and deepfake images, video and audio must be labelled. The Commission also referred to more than 180 organisations that have signed its Code of Practice on the transparency of AI-generated content.

Why it matters for listed companies

From 2 August the Commission can act against providers of general-purpose AI models sold in the EU, a group that includes US developers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta and Microsoft as well as Europe's Mistral, and labelling duties apply to companies deploying chatbots and synthetic media. The cost is compliance work and legal exposure, not a direct charge; the page gives no monetary figure, so the financial effect cannot be sized from it. The delayed high-risk rules are a separate timetable.
