Congress clears a stopgap funding bill 370-48 in the House, keeping the government open through December 11

What happened

The House approved the Senate's version of the Continuing Appropriations Act of 2026 (H.R. 6500) by 370 votes to 48, sending it for the president's signature. The measure extends federal funding at current levels through December 11, 2026, past the September 30 end of the fiscal year, and removes the risk of a shutdown on October 1. Lawmakers still have to finish the 12 full-year appropriations bills before the new deadline.

Why it matters for listed companies

A shutdown delays payments and new awards for companies that sell to the federal government, chiefly defence and aerospace contractors, government IT and consulting firms, and health-care companies paid through federal programmes, and it suspends some regulatory work such as SEC reviews of new listings. The extension removes that risk for the autumn only: funding stays at last year's levels, new programmes generally cannot start under a stopgap, and the same question returns on December 11.
