Oil gave up early gains on Monday, October 5. Brent first rose 0.79% to $103.06 a barrel and then eased to about $101.20; US crude slipped to $89.73 after touching $91.57. Kpler data cited by Reuters put crude flows through the Strait of Hormuz at 19.5 to 22.5 million barrels a day between September 27 and 29, roughly double the level a month earlier. Risks remain: a tanker was hit by an unidentified projectile, and Iran's parliament speaker said on Sunday the strait stays shut until seven conditions are met.
Why it matters for listed companies
India imports most of its crude, and much of it comes from the Gulf, so the volume moving through Hormuz matters as much as the headline price. More cargoes getting through eases the supply squeeze that has kept Brent above $100, which feeds into refiners' crude costs, the under-recoveries of state fuel retailers, jet fuel and LPG prices, and the import bill that weighs on the rupee. The relief is partial: the price is still above $100, shipping and insurance costs on the route stay elevated after the latest tanker strike, and US-Iran talks have produced no lasting agreement in the conflict's eighth month.
