Blackstone's $79 billion private credit fund caps withdrawals at 5% after investors seek 10%

US Financials

What happened

Blackstone limited redemptions from its flagship Blackstone Private Credit Fund (BCRED) for the first time after investors asked to pull 10% of shares; a filing said the fund would allow only 5%. In the previous quarter BCRED had met all of the 7.9% of shares requested, with senior executives helping finance the withdrawals with their own cash. Bloomberg described Blackstone as the latest firm to cap withdrawals amid a continued investor exodus from such funds.

Why it matters for listed companies

Semi-liquid private credit funds sold to wealthy individuals are a major growth channel for listed alternative asset managers such as Blackstone, Apollo, Ares, Blue Owl and KKR, so gated withdrawals and weaker inflows slow growth in their fee-earning assets. Banks that provide leverage to these vehicles and listed business development companies holding similar loans are exposed if redemption pressure forces asset sales or exposes weaker loan values.
